Description
An archaeological desk-based assessment (DBA) and walkover survey were undertaken by High;and Archaeology Services in 2023 in order to inform a proposed planning application. The DBA sought to establish the archaeological potential of the site by investigating records that may provide evidence for heritage assets within or around the proposed development area. Across the survey area there was a thick covering of bracken making it harder to see certain features and it was recommended that a programme of more detailed walkover survey should be undertaken during the late winter or early spring when vegetation is down, and features are likely to be visible. This would provide a more comprehensive record of the features and allow a more focused area of protection to be established as appropriate. The DBA confirmed that there was archaeological and historical activity within the study area. The presence of two post-medieval farmsteads within the site boundary attested to post-medieval activity in the area. A number of archaeological surveys had been undertaken within the study area, with the assessments revealing a landscape rich in archaeological features ranging from the Medieval to Post-medieval periods. This demonstrated that there was archaeological potential within the site boundary for further discoveries. <1>
