Full Description

A mill (labelled 'Miln') and lade are shown at this locations on a 1757 map of part of the annexed estate of Lovat lying in Kilmorack by Peter May. <1>

The mill is shown in a painting by Thomas Allom, engraved by E Benjamin for William Beattie's 'Scotland Illustrated' publlshed in 1838. It shows a one, possibly one and half, storey 'L'-shaped mill near the foot of the Kilmorack Falls. Though the water wheel and outflow are shown there is no depiction of the lade which led from a weir constructed into the river. The lade may originally have been a simple eathwork channel, perhaps later replaced with a more directed weir delivering the water but its omission by Allom may just be artistic licence. The engraving was also used in a French work at the time. <2> <3>

Shown on the OS 1st Edition 25 inch map. <4>

Photographs taken in the early C20 show a larger two and a half-storey, though still 'L'-shaped, building.

The mill was apparently 'destroyed' by fire on 05/07/1918. (see linked Am Baile page). The site, though still on land and not apparently flooded as a result of the construction of the nearby dam, would appear to have been landscaped as part of the works for the construction of the dam and its access.
