Full Description
Graveyard around the ruined chapel of St Oran on Isle Ornsay, Sleat. See MHG5413 for the chapel.
Teampull, Ornsay, Isle of Ornsay. At the S end of Ornsay, on a plateau some 100 yds from and 40 ft. above high water mark, and sheltered by quickly rising ground to the N, is an old burying ground in which are the scanty remains of an ancient church. Oblong on plan, it is orientated nearly ESE and measures 26 1/2 ft. in length and about 13 1/2 ft in breadth internally. The wall, built of stone and shell lime, is reduced to a height of only 1 ft 6 ins. And measures about 2 ft 3 ins. Thick. The door was probably placed near the W end of the S wall. <1>
The church is as described by RCAHMS. The graveyard is now disused and neglected.
Visited by OS (A S P) 21 June 1961.
Lochaber and Skye Monumental Inscriptions, pre 1855: Monumental inscription survey completed by Alastair G Beattie & Margaret H Beattie. The survey may not include inscription information after 1855 and each inscription transcribed does not give the full details that appear on the stones, abbreviations used. Some ommissions and inacuracies may be encountered. <2>
The site of the chapel and its surrounding graveyard were surveyed by Archaeological and Ancient Landscape Survey in 2002. <3> NOTE: The survey is referred to in the later report and the plan of the site is also included but a copy of the original survey report was never received by the HER.
The site is now becoming increasingly overgrown with vegetation and self-sown trees. <4>
