Full Description
On the edge of dense forest to the NW of the NE settlement of the dispersed township of Upper Rogie, a conical earthfast boulder has 1 good cup and 2 poor cups on its upper surface. The boulder is c1.5m in diameter x 1m height. This is one a group of twelve stones mostly situated on two knolls. All the stones in this group will be recorded in detail as part of the Ross-shire Rock Art project taking place 2009-2011. <1>
This panel was recorded as part of the ScRAP (Scotland’s Rock Art project) by members of NoSAS in November 2017. The panel is located at/near the top of wide flat ridge which runs east-west. Once away from the broad top of the ridge the ground slopes more steeply to the south and overlooks the Black Water river. To the northwest is the small burn Caochan Domhain beyond which the ground rises up to Carn Gorn (556m). Remains of settlements (stone footings) are present in the forest the nearest being about 60m NNW in a clearing. A forest road is at nearest about 60m to the west. In dense forest, the panel is best located from the ruined settlement, which is visible from the forest road. The panel is the northernmost of a group of panels in the area, surveyed by NOSAS in 2010 (see <1>).
The panel is a domed boulder 1.1m high, and approximately oval in plan with a distinct vertical flat end at the southeast. The surface is rough in texture but presents a smooth outline. There is one very distinct cupmark near the top of the panel and two fainter ones close by. <2>
