Full Description
The site of a WWII Anderson shelter on Joss Street, Invergordon.
The structure was investigated in 2015 as part of the ARCH project 'Invergordon in World War I'. A corrugated iron building with a curved roof situated beside the road is remembered at this location. It appears to have been an Anderson Shelter, and is locally remembered as such, but it was above ground, not semi-underground as one would expect from a shelter. A number of these buildings can be seen on aerial photos from 1947, near houses built around the wartime at Joss Street and near Outram and Clyde Streets. They may be prefab sheds to go with the new housing, or perhaps they were meant to have dual functions. This one is thought to have been moved, and is now a garden shed. <1>
