Full Description
A hut circle at Dun-Garbh-Airigh. Originally recorded by the OS as hut circle C.
Centred on NH 644 987 within a contemporary field system marked by stone clearance heaps and some wasted walls, is a settlement of three hut circles (A - C). Measurements are given between wall centres.
'A' measures 7.5m in diameter with the entrance in the SE.
'B' is oval and 13.5m NW-SE by 11.0m NE-SW with the entrance in the SE.
'C' is oval and 8.5m NNW-SSE by 7.5m WSW-ENE with an entrance gap in the SSE.
Surveyed at 1/10,560.
Visited by OS (J M) 19 June 1975.
No change.
Visited by OS (J M) 11 September 1980.
GIS spatial data amended in 2023 according to location as seen on vertical APs and Old SMR 1:10,000 map sheets. <1> <2>
DBAs and walkover surveys were carried out by CFA Archaeology Ltd in November 2002 and April 2003 in advance of a proposed wind farm development at Cambusmore Estate, near Bonar Bridge, Sutherland.
Site 1; Recessed into the south-facing slope of a low heather covered knoll is a roughly circular platform c.7m in diameter. The platform has a slight, stone revetted apron (up to 0.4m high) on its front (south) edge. There is a negligible stone content on the platform itself. 25m to the east is an area of stone clearance overgrown with moss. <3>
Note: the CFA report places a new hut circle at NH 6441 9869 but the NGR relationship for hut circles 'A' and 'B' and the absence of 'C' in the report suggests a possible error in the transposing of the grid co-ordinates and should probably be something like NH 6491 9869. This would make Site 1 in the report Hut Circle 'C' as recorded by the OS. (TB 11/11/24)
