Full Description
The remains of a farmstead at Clais-na-sinneig. The site consists of dyked fields/enclosures with some small areas of rig cultivation and a small cluster of buildings. The features are visible on vertical aerial photographs. <1>
A desk-based assessment and walkover survey was undertaken by CFA Archaeology in 2017 of the proposed Garvary Wind Farm development site.
The remains of a small farmstead and field system are shown on modern Ordnance Survey maps (2015). The map shows up to five possible unroofed buildings and some
associated field banks. The farmstead, comprising five roofed structures, two partly enclosed fields and a length of boundary bank, is shown on the Ordnance Survey 1879 map. It is shown as an abandoned (unroofed) settlement on the 1907 map. The vague outlines of fields defined by low banks and possible buildings are visible on modern aerial photographic imagery (Google Earth). The remains appear to be those of a small township (fermtoun) abandoned sometime between 1874 and 1903 (the date of the 2nd edition survey). <2>
