Listed Building

Listed Buildings are buildings and structures that have been designated as being of ‘special architectural or historic interest’. Listed Buildings are protected by planning legislation and Listed Building Consent must be granted before any alterations, demolitions or extensions can take place. Listing covers both the inside and outside of a building. Listed Buildings are divided into three categories; A, B and C (formerly C(S)). Category A Listed Buildings are of national or international importance or are fine little-altered examples of a particular period. Category B Listed Buildings are of regional importance and represent major examples of a period, style or type of building. Some alterations may have taken place. Category C Listed Buildings are of local importance or lesser examples of a period, style or type of building. Simple traditional buildings can also be Category C Listed if they form part of a group or complex of buildings alongside Category A and B Listed Buildings.
