Description

Stuart Farrell was commissioned by Davidson Smith Partnership Chartered Architects on behalf of Amcows 32 Ltd in October 2003 to undertake an archaeological recording project for a group of buildings at 2-6 Eastgate & 1-5 Market Brae, Inverness (centred at NH 6682 / 4527) as part of a redevelopment project. Highland Council Archaeology Unit produced a specification for thiswork. Work revealed a total of 6 buildings had once occupied the development area dating from the late 18th century onwards, of these only 3 buildings were still standing which had seen use until the current day though with occasional alterations and reuse as a variety of commercial premises. No earlier archaeological deposits were revealed especially to the street frontage as two buildings had cellars and the southern extent of the buildings had been cut back into the natural hillside.
