EHG112 - Environmental sampling - Johann Cottage, Fort Augustus

The house known as Johann Cottage is reputed to have its origins in the mid 18th century. It is situated just to the east of the north end of the Bridge of Oich, Fort Augustus. Until recently the building was covered with corrugated iron roofing and it was only during renovation that it was recognised that areas of well-preserved thatch survived. The Highland Vernacular Buildings Trust were given a short time to record and sample areas of interest within the building. As part of this work a complete section of part of the roof including the cabers and all the overlying thatch was taken and other samples made available for detailed investigation. <1>
