EHG1200 - Watching brief - Ferry Lane, Beauly
Technique(s)
Organisation
Stuart Farrell
Date
June-Sept 2004
Description
An archaeological watching brief was carried out at Ferry Lane, Beauly, Inverness-shire in 2004 by Highland Archaeology Services at the request of Stuart Farrell, in response to an archaeological planning condition, where several houses are under construction. The site lies within the historic town of Beauly. Excavations for the strip foundations of several houses were observed and photographed. In the circumstances it was not possible to clean these sections by hand, but the make-up of the site was clear nonetheless. The southern part of the site consisted largely of highly disturbed rubble and the debris of former buildings along the frontage to Ferry Lane. Behind this lay an area of stony garden soil and a cobbled yard area made with round river cobbles. The part of the site north of Ferry Lane was found to be made up entirely of clean yellow/grey sandy clay which appeared to be natural. There were no recommendations for further work. <1>
