Date
1999
Description
A walkover survey southwest of Ceann a' Chreagain, Strontian, was conducted by Headland Archaeology in 1999 to support a woodland grant scheme application. The survey area covered 38 ha and was systematically walked by a team of archaeologists. All features of archaeological interest were described and, when possible, located using a total station. Due to dense tree cover it was at times very difficult to have an uninterrupted sightline from the features to the Total Station. The steep and featureless wood slope made it difficult to use alternative locational methods but, in most cases, it was possible to locate the structures to within 5-10m. In addition to the tree cover, the survey area was also covered in deep bracken in places. It was therefore considered possible that some structures were not detected, especially smaller, less well-defined features. Four features or groups of features of Archaeological interest were recorded, with site 2 consisting of 30 charcoal-burning platforms. <1>
