EHG1364 - Trial trenching - Rosebank, Culrain
Technique(s)
Organisation
Highland Archaeology Services Ltd
Date
Feb 2006
Description
A trial trenching evaluation was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2006 at a site proposed for a house at Rosebank, Culrain, Sutherland. An initial metal detector survey was carried out in October 2005 by members of the Highland Historical Search Society accompanied by J Wood of HAS. This produced three artefacts, none were considered to be of great archaeological significance. An earth resistance geophysical survey was also undertaken (see EHG1350). All the trenches were approximately 1.4m wide except for Trench 6. A total area of approximately 376m² was opened; the total planning application area was approximately 3,200m², but trenches 2, 6 and 7 extended to the north of the application area,
between the geophysical anomalies and the visible field clearance heaps where archaeological potential could be affected by subsequent post-development activity. The sample size of the application area itself was approximately 10%. No trenches contained archaeological evidence. No further archaeological evaluation or recording work was recommended. <1>
