EHG1609 - Trial trenching - Housing at Campbells Farm, Broadford

Technique(s)

Organisation

Highland Heritage

Date

Feb-March 2007

Description

An archaeological trial trenching evaluation was undertaken by Highland Heritage in 2007 prior to a housing development on land at Campbell's Farm, Broadford, Skye. The programme of work included documentary research, walkover survey and test excavation. At an early stage of the evaluation it was appreciated that two factors of archaeological interest requiring particular attention had been encountered: firstly, the confirmed location on a raised beach; secondly, the implications of a peat covered surface. The excavation was conducted in three parts: Area 2b was evaluated on 19th February 2007; Area 2a on 20th-21st February; and a peat covered stone feature located at Area 2b-7 was excavated on 7th-9th March. This stone feature was interpreted as an insubstantial modern shelter possibly for peat cutters or sheep. It was concluded that there were no important archaeological or historical features in the development area and that no further archaeological work on the site was required. <1>
