University of Aberdeen

Date

July-Aug 1998

Description

In July-August 1998 a further season of excavation at the deserted township of Baldow (aka Easter Raitts) was carried out by students of the Certificate in Field Archaeology at the University of Aberdeen. The excavations were focussed on the largest building identified at the township (Structure 6) as well as two small, apparently scooped features (26 and 15) lying outside the two longhouses (21 and 24) investigated the previous year (see EHG3720). In addition excavation of the interior of longhouse 21 also continued to explore the sequence of floor deposits and other features in its west end and entrance. The investigations on Structure 6 also provided the opportunity to check the findings of some of the trial trenches excavated in 1995 (see EHG3717). The project was sponsored by Historic Scotland, Highland Council, University of Aberdeen and Highland Vernacular Buildings Trust. <1> A group of photographic slides taken during the excavations are in the Highland HER collections. <2>
