EHG254 - DBA and walkover survey - proposed hydro-electric scheme, Glen Tarbet

Technique(s)

Organisation

SUAT Ltd

Date

Dec 1999

Description

A rapid desk-based assessment (DBA) and field survey were carried out by SUAT in 1999 in advance of a proposed pipeline route in the Glen Tarbert area, east of Strontian, on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, Highland, prior to the development of a small hydroelectric station. The work was commissioned by National Power Plc. The DBA and survey uncovered little evidence of archaeological sites in the area, although two areas of possible settlement were located, one of which lay directly on the way-leave of the proposed route of the pipeline and a prehistoric flint arrowhead was also recovered from a peat deposit. It was recommended that these possible settlement locations be marked out by archaeologists in order that the development activity, especially machining, might avoid them. It was considered that it might prove necessary to manually excavate a possible hut circle that lay within the way-leave. <1> Received Slides: <2> <3> <4> <5> <6> <7> <8> <9>
