EHG26 - Walkover Survey - Balchladich CG, Assynt
Technique(s)
Organisation
Catherine Dagg
Date
June 1999
Description
A field evaluation walk-over of an area affected by the proposed Woodland Grant Scheme, prior to the submission of detailed planting plans, was conducted at Balchladich, Assynt. Various books, including 'The Assynt Clearances' and 'Population Lists of Assynt 1638-1811', both by Malcolm Bangor-Jones, were consulted for background information on the settlement patterns of pre- and post-clearance Assynt. This was followed by a rapid walk over survey carried out on June 28th 1999 in clear and sunny conditions. The object of the survey was to identify features of archaeological interest and where necessary to recommend mitigating actions to minimise damage to the archaeological record. The area of the proposed scheme is on Lewisian Gneiss, producing a landscape of knolls and ridges of bare fissured rock, numerous small lochans and deep peat bogs. <1>
