Date

Feb-Sept 2008

Description

An archaeological watching brief took place during on land site works and offshore dredging in Clachan Harbour, Raasay in advance of a proposed ferry terminal and infrastructure development within Churchton Bay. Previous archaeological work had identified an archaeological layer, most likely Mesolithic in date, beneath a raised beach. Three sondages were excavated in Area 3 and dredging monitored in the harbour with the aim of assessing the survival of these deposits and to provide information on how far inland the deposits survived. The peat layer was not identified within the sondages or during the dredging conducted in the harbour. Topsoil stripping on land in four separate areas revealed no features of archaeological significance. <1>
