Glasgow University (GUARD)

Date

1998

Description

A resistivity survey around the site of the Scheduled possible early Christian monastic site at Chapel Hill, Ballachly, in Dunbeath was carried out by GUARD in 1998 as part of a research project funded by Historic Scotland, the Dunbeath Preservation Trust and the landowners. The aim of the project was to advance knowledge about the Scheduled Monument beyond local traditions and references from C18 travellers to inform management policy for the site and to increase the level of information available. The survey area was carried out in two of the four areas (Areas 3 and 4) identified during a topographic survey (see EHG2850). All of the Scheduled area was avoided. Area 3 was constrained by portions of the Scheduling which meant that the survey could not cover the entire field. Both areas produced major anomalies, partly geological and partly with archaeological potential. <1>
