EHG3142 - Tape measure survey and detailed recording, the Thesis, Sound of Mull (SOMAP)
Technique(s)
Organisation
Sound of Mull Archaeological Project
Date
2000 to 2004
Description
Between 2000 and 2004 some 160 survey dives by 38 divers generated records of this wreck. Following a thorough reconnaissance of the wreck and its surrounding debris field, work began in 2000 on the compilation of a deck plan, by means of offset tape-measure survey. Large inaccuracies resulted and a change of approach was adopted in 2002, when a fixed control network was established. Detailed recording was undertaken of many features, including measured drawings, use of video and stilll photography. Recording of the profile began in 2002, using plumb bobs to establish relative depth measurements. The bow was recorded by photo-mosaic and measured drawing; the counter-stern by measured sketch and mathematics. Sampling was also undertaken of iron fragments, ferrous sediments and coal. <1>
