Description

A rapid archaeological survey of a proposed WGS application was undertaken by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 2000 at Aryhoulan, Ardgour near Fort William. The purpose of this survey was to identify the nature and position of archaeological remains in this area, so that mitigation work to protect these remains could be carried out in the design of the woodland. A desk-based assessment was carried out examining the Highland Council's Sites and Monuments Record and earlier OS map editions of the area held by Highland Council Archive Service. A walk-over survey was carried out on the 28th March in dry conditions. The survey was concentrated on the lower ground to the NE and NW of the proposed WGS as it was anticipated that it was in these areas that archaeological remains were likely to be encountered. Some attention was also paid to existing stands of woodland to establish whether there was any history of woodland management in form of coppicing or charcoal burning platforms. A photographic record was made of two areas of dyke as it was proposed to reconstruct these within the WGS. <1>
