Date

Description

A desk-based assessment and walkover survey was undertaken by Headland Archaeology in 1997 in advance of a proposed WGS application on the Black Corries Esatate. Nine areas were surveyed. There were previously no existing records of known sites within the survey areas. The DBA identified three structures within or immediately adjacent to the survey areas and these were located during the survey. The survey additionally identified five platforms in Area 8, possibly constructed for charcoal burning in the 18th century, and two small structures in Area 1, probably shieling huts or medieval or later date. No features of archaeological interest were identified in Areas 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7. All sites were considered to be of local importance. It was recommended that Sites 1, 2 and 9 could be excluded from the planting scheme by minor re-positioning of planting boundaries. Sites 3 to 8 in Area 8 coud not be excluded but it was concluded that the promotion of tree regeneration in this area would not lead to significant loss of archaeological information. <1> The survey information was used to inform an Environmental Statement that presented amended planting areas. <2>
