Description

Trial excavations were carried out by J Wordsworth in the field immediately southeast of Balloan Farm, Inverness, in 1990 prior to a proposed housing development. Three trenches were positioned across a cropmark of a possible Iron Age pit alignment. The topsoil was stripped my machine and then the trenches were manually cleaned. Excavation in the southernmost and central trenches revealed that the feature causing the cropmark was actually a gully which was interpreted as a ploughed-down field boundary ditch. The northernmost trench contained a 5m wide former road, also seen as a cropmark, and a linear feature interpreted as a possible ha ha. <1> <2>
