EHG3689 - Geophysical survey - Culloden Battlefield
Technique(s)
Organisation
Glasgow University (GUARD)
Date
Sept 2001
Description
A GPR survey was carried out by GUARD in 2001 in two locations at the Culloden Battlefield site. The survey was carried out to support subsequent fieldwork as part of the BBC television series 'Two Men in a Trench'. At the first site, the area of the clan graves, both the cairns and the space between them, previously the road, were scanned. The results clearly showed the presence of grave pits beneath the mounds in the clan cemetery and also under the ground where the road had been. The second area surveyed was a part of the 'Field of the English'. A large anomaly was detected, which when processed proved to be a large rectangular hole. If it represented the burial site of the government troops who died in the battle then its size might indicate that the contemporary accounts of the number of dead were too low. <1>
