Description
Three trenches were excavated by GUARD in 2001 at the Culloden Battlefield site. The work was carried out as part of the BBC television series 'Two Men in a Trench'. They were concentrated in the area around the Old Leanach Cottage and were excavated in an attempt to find remains of a barn known as the 'Red Barn' which had figured in the afrtermath of the battle. A trench was put across an earthwork adjacent to the cottage. In the event no signs of a building were encountered but a wall, probably part of a later kitchen garden attached to cottage was revealed. A trench on the interior of the earthwork similarly found no traces of floor surfaces or burning. A third trench to the northeast of the cottage exposed only activity related to a C19 smallholding with nothing to suggest anything on the site as early as the battle. <1>
