EHG3725 - Excavation - Baldow deserted settlement (Easter Raitts), Alvie

Technique(s)

Organisation

University of Aberdeen

Date

Jun-Jul 1999

Description

Over five weeks in July and August 1999 a further season of excavation at the deserted township of Baldow (aka Easter Raitts) was carried out by students of the Certificate in Field Archaeology at the University of Aberdeen. The excavation was focussed on a built platform at the western edge of the township. This revealed a complex history of use with finds of prehistoric pottery (probably Bronze Age but found as residual finds in later contexts) representing the earliest and an extension to a sub-rectangular building dating to the mid-late C18 as the latest. Excavation of the platform was planned to continue in the summer of 2000. The project was sponsored by Historic Scotland, Highland Council, Highland Vernacular Buildings Trust, University of Aberdeen and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. <1>
