Technique(s)
Organisation
Applecross Archaeology Society
Date
June & July 2010
Description
Archaeological excavations were carried out by Applecross Archaeology Society assisted by professional archaeologists, over four weeks in June and July 2010, for the fifth season of investigations at the broch site at Applecross, Wester Ross. Open area excavation was conducted throughout the four quadrants opened in previous seasons. Open area excavation was also conducted to the north west side of the main structure, between trenches 5, 6 and 3 covering an area measuring approximately 7 x 5m. Trench 9 was extended over an area measuring approximately 6 x 4m on the north west side of the site, to further explore a sub-broch feature uncovered during the 2009 season. Four small sondages between 1-1.5m wide were opened below the outermost wall faces to the north west, north, southeast and southwest of the main structure in order to investigate stratigraphic relationships. <1>
