EHG4157 - Condition and photographic survey - Top Barns, Mains of Applecross

Technique(s)

Organisation

Andrew P K Wright

Date

July 2009

Description

A condition survey was carried out by Andrew P K Wright in July 2009 to guage the potential of the surviving 'Top barn' to be used as an orientation and interpretation point for the nearby broch. This hebridean barn was considered of great significance and it was advised that repairs should be guided by conservation plans based on authorative research into the history of the site and its relationship with the mains farm. It was suggested that consideration should have been given to recognising the significance of the site through appropriate designation. It was also suggested that it would be difficult to use the barn for the proposed purpose unless the site was repaired and any other changes made were reversible. The southernmost roofless barn was also surveyed at this time. <1>
