Description

A rapid walkover survey was undertaken by J.G. Robertson in 2010 on behalf of Hydroplan UK, in the Allt Mheil valley, Glenquoich Estate, Glengarry, Lochaber, prior to the proposed construction of a hydro scheme. The survey area was situated on the North shore of Loch Quoich, to the East of the bridge over Glen Quoich. The scheme consisted of a pipeline running down the East bank of Allt Uaine from Intake 1b, joined by a pipeline running from Intake 1a on Allt Mheil. The combined pipeline would then run to Powerhouse 1 at the mouth of Allt Uaine, below the Kinloch Hourn road. The survey area comprised a narrow strip of land, 50m either side of the pipeline. It also included an area, 50m in diameter around the intakes and 100m in diameter around the powerhouse. The desk-based research was followed by a rapid walkover survey of the area, which was undertaken on 21st May 2010 in dry sunny conditions, after a prolonged dry spell. Further walkover survey was undertaken in wet conditions on 19th September to accommodate changes in the design of the hydro schemes. Only four features were identified. Two were C19-early C20 paths, one a former woodland enclosure wall and the fourth was a clay pipe which may have been to supply water to the now lost Glenquoich Lodge or possibly the supply for a hydro scheme. <1>
