Description

Excavations were carried out by Field Archaeology Specialists (FAS) at Castle Sinclair Girnigoe in Wick, Caithness in 2006, following on from work in previous years. Intervention 21, situated in the first floor of the West Gatehouse, and previously cleared of rubble overburden in 2004-5, involved the full recording of the exposed structural elements. Intervention 25, located in the West Barbican, was carried out as part of a programme of public archaeology excavation as a means of investigating structural remains encountered during the evaluation, and inviting supervised volunteer participation in the project. Intervention 26, an evaluation trench, was located on the headland adjacent to the Inner Bailey. It was opened up as a response to reports of a Roman coin hoard in the area, and to investigate the possible context of these finds. As both interventions 25 and 26 were ongoing projects, they were not reported on fully in the August 2007 report but were to be written up in a future report. <1> Note: the locations of Interventions 25 and 26 are not shown on any of the plans in the report. The formal report on Interventions 25 and 26 was included in a DSR produced by FAS in 2020. <2>
