Description
Nine archaeological sites, comprising a total of 26 individual features, were recorded in an archaeological survey for the Alcan Lochaber B Site 6 Hydro Scheme and grid connection, Alcan Estate, Leanachan, near Spean Bridge, Lochaber, Highland.
Three sites, Achadh na Sine (Achnashien) township, Site 6, the head dyke of Dhomhanaidh (Doney) township, Site 8, and the previously unrecorded shieling settlement, Site 1, are associated with the pre-clearance agricultural landscape of the 18th century and probably earlier. The 18th century also saw the construction of the Wade Road, Site 9. The sheepfold, Site 7, and probably the fence, Site 4, belong to the 19th century sheep farming operations. The remaining sites: the existing hydro scheme, Site 2, (still in use), the quarry, Site 3, and the Puggy Line, Site 5, are all associated with the Lochaber Aluminium Smelter and date from the late 1920’s. <1>
