Description

A new hydro electricity scheme is proposed at Cia-Aig, Loch Arkaig, Kilmallie, Inverness-shire . Initial archaeological work in advance of site clearance included the investigation and recording of a small archaeological feature located immediately north of the Allt Iain, a small tributary stream flowing east into the Cia Aig. Originally identified as a rough shieling-type shelter or hut with an associated dairy stance, this proved on initial investigation to overlie the foundation courses of a rectangular structure. Further excavation allowed the retrieval of mid to late 18th century artifacts and revealed a building modified soon after its original construction, subsequently abandoned and re-used as a shieling or shepherd’s hut.<1>
