Description

AOC Archaeology Group was commissioned by Highland Council to address the potential archaeological impact of a cemetery extension (NGR: NM 6747 6831) and creation of a playing field at Acharacle, Highland (NGR: NM 6747 6822). During previous works at the site of the playing field, the excavation of three drainage ditches saw the recovery of several wooden planks of Medieval date. In addition two possible artificial earthen mounds were identified. The current mitigation measures involved the investigation of the mounds through top-soil stripping and the implementation of a watching brief on ground breaking works associated with the cemetery extension. The investigation of the mounds revealed them to be glacial in origin. No significant archaeological features or material were identified. Further work on the stripping of the area marked for the sports field and cemetery extension showed there to be no archaeology existing in the stripped area. <1>
