Description

A desk-based assessment was undertaken by ASH Design + Assessment in 2003 to inform an environmental statement for the proposed upgrading of the A830 between Arisaig and Loch nan Uamh. Desk studies included a review of all known records of cultural heritage interests and by an examination of aerial photographs. Consultations have been carried out with Scottish Natural Heritage, Historic Scotland, the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland, the Highland Council Archaeologist and Planning Department, the Royal Botanic Gardens: Edinburgh and the Arisaig Community Council. It was considered that the proposed route would not physically affect most of the known sites of cultural heritage interest and the setting of most of the sites of interest would not be significantly affected. The proposed road would result in the demolition of the Category C(s) listed structure, Larachmore road bridge, and would have a moderate impact upon the Larachmore Gardens Designed Landscape in so far as the route would require the removal of trees and shrubs on the northern and eastern boundary of the Garden. There would be minor impact on Arisaig House Gardens. The setting of Larachmore Railway Bridge and Borrodale House would be slightly enhanced since the new road would be further from this structure and building than the existing road. <1>
