EHG5032 - Watching Brief - Carn Liath Broch
Technique(s)
Organisation
Kirkdale Archaeology
Date
Jan-Feb 2007
Description
A watching brief was maintained while contractors excavated a trench along the outside of the existing fence around the perimeter of the guardianship area surrounding the broch. This trench was required to allow the installation of a rabbit proof fence.
The only potentially significant archaeological feature encountered was the stonecapped watercourse seen towards the SW corner of the excavation. This feature, or at least part of it, may be contemporary with the broch, but may be a sign of more recent work to improve drainage in the area S of the broch. It was not disturbed, and it was agreed with the contractors that the installation of the new fence could be carried out without any further excavation in the area. Since this feature was not fully excavated, it was not possible to determine its date. Apart from this structure, there were no finds or features of archaeological significance encountered during these works. <1>
