Organisation

Date

Nov 2017 - April 2017

Description

An archaeological evaluation was carried out by AOC Archaeology in 2016-17 at Beachen Court, Grantown-on-Spey, in advance of the construction of a new housing development scheme. The evaluation was required in order to inform developers of the archaeological potential of the site. Fieldwork was carried out from the 21st – 23rd November 2016 and 24th – 27th April 2017. In the northwest corner of the site, eight features were identified comprising five pits, two linear features and a stone/turf boundary wall. The interpretation and significance of the archaeology in this part of the site was unclear during fieldwork and constraints imposed by the national park authority did not permit time to complete evaluation of this area. Evaluation of the south half of the site was completed in April 2017 where there were no areas of archaeological interest identified. After the trial trenching the archaeologists monitored the stripping of a large area to facilitate the building of an access road and haul roads for the cut and fill phase of the development. There were no further features of archaeological interest observed during this time. <1>
