Technique(s)

Organisation

AOC Archaeology Group

Date

Aug 2015

Description

Following on from a trench evaluation in Canal Park, Inverness in June 2015 (see EHG4690), an archaeological excavation was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in August 2015 in an area where nine substantial pit features had been identified. A 50m x 50m area around the sites was stripped and fifty-eight archaeological features recorded. These comprised subcircular and amorphous pits, forty of which were considered to be of significant archaeological interest and probably prehistoric in origin. Carbonised material, coarse pottery from a number of different vessels and flint artefacts were recovered from these features. There did not appear to be a visible pattern to the pit placement and it was recorded that further archaeological sites extended beyond the excavation area to the north-west and northeast. It was to be recommended that a programme of post-excavation analysis and reporting would be initated to enable interpretation and publication of these important archaeological results. <1>
