Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by SUAT Ltd in 2001 at Ashton Farm, Resaurie, Highland on groundworks required for the construction of a new telecommunications mast. The site was considered to be archaeologically sensitive due to the presence of various prehistoric features located within the vicinity. An area measuring 19 x 19 m within a field cropped with grass was observed as the topsoil and part of the subsoil was removed by machine to the required formation level. Observations revealed topsoil to a maximum depth of 0.40 m over subsoil 0.10 m thick over natural estuarine deposits comprising sand, silt and gravel, cobbles and small boulders. Excavation at the location of the mast base, an area measuring 5 x 5 m, extended through the subsoil and into the estuarine deposits to a depth of approximately 0.15 m. No archaeological features were observed on the site. <1>
