EHG5447 - Trial trenching - Culduthel

Technique(s)

Organisation

Highland Archaeology Services Ltd

Date

April 2017

Description

A trial trenching evaluation was carried out by Highland Archaeology Services in 2017 ahead of a proposed housing development at Culduthel, Inverness. Twenty six trenches were excavated. These revealed a total of fifty-six significant archaeological features including twenty nine field drains, sixteen pits and seven postholes, the arrangement of the latter indicating the location of at least one four-post earthfast timber structure. The focus of archaeological activity appeared to be concentrated around Trench 5 and it was therefore recommended that a subsequent stage of area excavation be undertaken, centred on this area, in order to fully characterise and record the archaeology present. <1>
