EHG5519 - Walkover survey - proposed South Road, Tanera Mor
Technique(s)
Organisation
Catherine Dagg
Date
June 2018
Description
A walkover survey was carried out by C Dagg in 2018 in advance of the construction of a new access road (South Road) on Tanera Mor. At the time of the survey, construction had already commenced at the north end of the proposed route. Flags were left as markers for the archaeological features identified within the route corridor but it has not, as yet, been possible to return to the island to ascertain whether these exclusion zones were adhered to. It was found that the proposed road route will cross an area of peat cuttings, a 20th century fence line and two turf and rubble dykes. It is recommended that the two dykes, marked with coloured flags, be protected from unnecessary damage by minimising the width of ground disturbance. These archaeological features should also be considered and respected when borrow pits and quarries are proposed. Any major deviation from the proposed route will not be covered by this evaluation and may require further site survey. <1>
