Date

Description

A walkover survey was carried out by Archaeological and Ancient Landscape Survey (AALS) in 1998 on the Sconser Estate, Skye on behalf of the John Muir Trust. The survey included those areas between sea level and the 350m contour, which amounted to a total area of some 20km² of mountain slopes and glens, but excluded the enclosed inbye around the township of Sconser. During the survey, 99 previously unrecorded sites were located and recorded and a known shieling site was re-examined. The new sites consisted mainly of shielings, in singles and in groups and pens, but included a previously unrecorded standing stone, a number of small cairns and the remains of a major settlement. The re-assessment of the known shieling group increased the number of structures from 12 to 19. <1> NOTE: Only a summary report is currently available. A copy of the full report, commissioned by the John Muir Trust, was never received for the then SMR and still remains unlocated. [IS-L 15/11/2022] The hut circles recorded in <1> were subsequently included in a report on the hut circles of the Strathaird, Torrin and Sconser Estates. <2>
