Description

Archaeological rescue site recording was carried out by AOC Archaeology Group in 2019 prior to the construction of a new canal control building by Tomnahurich swing bridge, Caledonian Canal, Inverness. As a conditon of the Scheduled Monument Consent (as the works would impact on the eathworks of the Scheduled Caledonian Canal) all groundworks were to be archaeologically monitored. However, considerable initial site works went ahead without monitoring. The recording of the exposed sections of the canal bank showed that the bank is made up of at least three upper deposits, which, in this area, had been cut by multiple recent groundwork events. Within the bank there is a distinct deposit of slate fragments which may have possibly once related to building or quarried material. The recording of the sections provided an opportunity to investigate three of the upper deposits that form the bank of the Caledonian Canal. <1>
