Description
An archaeological desk-based assessment and walkover survey was undertaken by Northlight Heritage in 2017 in relation to a proposed new overhead power line between Broadford substation and Kyleakin substation on the Isle of Skye. The assessment was conducted on behalf of Ellendale Environmental. The desk-based assessment encompassed a corridor 1 km either side of the proposed OHL route, from which a total of 128 sites were identified. An archaeological walkover survey was conducted between 25th and 27th July 2017 to check if any extant features survived 50 m either side of the proposed overhead line route. The route surveyed was an approximation of where the overhead line would run. All sites or features identified during the walkover survey were recorded by digital photography and written description on pro-forma record sheets. Features were located using GPS and their full extent surveyed. In the walkover survey, a series of stone and turf boundary walls, a distinct mound and the remains of a winder house and trackway relating to the Skye marble railway were highlighted along the proposed route while the surrounding landscape held a variety of archaeological sites from various periods. <1>
