Date

Feb 2020

Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2020 in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the existing Armadale trading area by way of the demolition of a retail building and shed, and the refurbishment and extension of a bungalow housing offices. The work was required due to the close proximity of the site to a chambered cairn and the site of significant Bronze Age buried archaeology discovered during the construction of housing. Fieldwork was carried out on the 6th, 11th and 12th February 2020. A substantial quantity of building rubble was identified, originating from building works carried out at Armadale Castle sometime in the 1980s, beneath modern rubbish constituting deliberate landfill and ground levelling. No archaeological features were recorded. <1>
