Description

An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out by West Coast Archaeological Services in 2021 for the Knoydart Forest Trust, Knoydart, Lochaber, in advance of proposed woodland creation project at Coire Calg, Barrisdale, Lochaber. A walkover survey had also been originally proposed as a part of the archaeological input for this project, but this was negated as the ground had already been covered sufficiently previously. The work was undertaken to assess the nature and extent of any archaeological sites likely to be affected within the areas outlined for planting and regeneration within the woodland creation scheme and to inform recommendations for the protection and management of any sites recovered. The level of the survey already carried out at the proposed site, along with the desk based assessment carried out for this report, provided sufficient data to allow the woodland creation scheme to move forward without further field survey. The previous desk-based assessments and walkover surveys carried out around Barrisdale Bay, including the ground proposed for this woodland creation scheme, recorded a small stone cairn, a sheepfold, and associated enclosures, and two areas of relict rig and furrow cultivation. Mitigation measures are proposed to safeguard the sites during the establishment of the woodland creation project. <1>
