Description

A trial trenching evaluation and metal detecting survey were carried out by GUARD Archaeology Ltd in 2021 at Upper Achintore, Fort William. In the first instance trenches equating to a sample of approximately 6% of the development footprint were tested by archaeological trial trenching. A 1% contingency was available in the event that archaeology was encountered but this did not have to be deployed. A total of 17 trenches were metal detected and excavated across a development area measuring approximately 10.87 ha, totalling approximately 4,239 m² distributed across the available area. The trenches measured 1.8 m wide and between 25 m and 50 m long and were positioned to provide even coverage across the Site and at a range of orientations. No significant archaeological finds, features or deposits were revealed during the programme of works. <1>
