Date

March 2021

Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Highland Archaeology Services in 2021 during preliminary groundworks for installation of two new biomass boiler pipelines at Gledfield House, Ardgay. Three narrow trenches were excavated across the formal garden grounds. Four features were recorded during the watching brief, two of these comprised planting cuts, one represented a deposit of material possibly associated with construction of the nearby Loggia. The footings of a narrow stone wall were encountered near to the cottages at the north of the garden, which may be associated with a former greenhouse. There were also various disused pipelines from former services for the house. The only artefact recovered was a discarded floor tile from the listed Garden Loggia. No artefacts or samples were recovered that would benefit from further analysis or dating, and so no further work is recommended. <1>
