Description

A trial trenching evaluation was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2022, commissioned by Peoples for Places in advance of the Phase 2 development at Tornagrain, Croy, Inverness-shire. At Block 20/21 10 trenches totalling 480 linear metres were excavated. At Block 104/106, 24 trenches totalling 1190 linear metres were excavated. Both sites revealed a sandy loam topsoil overlying a natural of mottled sands with frequent gravel patches. The area had been intensively ploughed with plough scarring visible where the topsoil was shallow. No features were recorded within Blocks 20/21. However, a small number of features were recorded in a single trench in Block 104/106, as well as some farmers clearance pits. The features consisted of five small pits with dark silty sand fills. No finds were recovered. Given the prehistoric activity in the area, it is likely they are of prehistoric origin. Further works may be considered necessary. <1>
