Description

An archaeological desk-based assessment and walkover survey were carried out by West Coast Archaeological Services in 2021 on behalf of TreeStory Limited and Reay Farms Limited in advance of a woodland creation scheme. The survey area included wild, upland moorland terrain located to the south of the A836 road at Reay, Caithness. The walkover survey recorded 20 archaeological sites comprising a total of 36 individual structures/features. These included a prehistoric hut circle, a farmstead complex, two individual farmsteads, stone cairns, a summit shelter, a small cave, and structures relating to transhumance activities in the landscape. These included a shieling cell, a sheepfold, a stock enclosure, and field dykes. <1>
