EHG5848 - Watching brief and metal detector survey - Fraser Stone, Culloden Battlefield
Technique(s)
Organisation
West Coast Archaeological Services
Date
June 2021
Description
A watching brief and metal detecting survey were undertaken by West Coast Archaeological Services in 2021 in relation to the removal of a gravel deposit adjacent to the Fraser Stone, re-turfing of the area and creation of a new footpath; and the upgrading of a desire-line footpath running through the Graves of the Clans Scheduled Monument Area at Culloden Battlefield, Inverness. The requirement for an archaeological watching brief and associated metal-detecting survey arose as the proposed remedial works are located within the designated area of Culloden Battlefield, in close proximity to the marked clan graves, and in an area with potential for the survival of buried archaeological deposits. No archaeological deposits were disturbed and the artefacts recovered from metal detecting the topsoil, turf and quarry dust used in the footpath repairs comprised relatively modern ferrous nails and a washer. Therefore, no recommendations were made for any post-excavation analysis. <1>
